About Us
Seed2Fork is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing Type 2 Diabetes by fostering healthier communities through education and access to nutritious food. We accomplish this by cultivating Garden STEM programs, ART initiatives, and Demonstration Health Gardens across Washington State, bridging urban and rural communities with innovative solutions.
Our work is guided by research, including the Washington State University Diabetes Epidemic and Action Report, which highlights the connection between food insecurity and higher diabetes rates.

At Seed2Fork, we also address the systemic injustice of food apartheid—a term that underscores the deliberate segregation of food access based on race, geography, and economic inequality. This system perpetuates health disparities, disproportionately impacting marginalized communities. By dismantling these barriers, we strive to create equitable food systems that empower individuals to thrive.

Join us in our mission to combat diabetes and food apartheid. Together, we can nurture healthier lifestyles and build resilient communities that prioritize well-being for all.

We Care for the Earth – We recognize that caring for the planet is an ongoing journey, particularly within BIPOC communities, where systemic injustices often create barriers to environmental stewardship. Our commitment is to approach this work with intention, equity, and respect for the unique challenges our neighborhoods face.
We Care for the People – Our mission includes preserving and sharing cultural seeds—both literal and metaphorical—by honoring traditional methods passed down through generations. These ancestral practices guide us in fostering resilience, connection, and well-being within our communities.
We Embrace Fair Share for All – Inspired by the time-honored traditions of Black, Latino, and Indigenous societies, we are committed to ensuring equity in all that we do. These communities have long upheld practices of collective care, ensuring that the fruits of labor are shared so that everyone can thrive. We strive to carry this legacy forward in everything we cultivate.
Our Focus
At Seed2Fork, we recognize the unique challenges faced by urban and rural communities, particularly those in underserved areas often labeled as "wrong" zip codes. Through years of engagement, we’ve identified the roadblocks and misconceptions that hinder meaningful progress in these spaces.
Our work has been shaped by countless conversations with people of color, low-income individuals, and students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds. In these discussions, we’ve centered on two essential questions:

-
What do you need to feel safe when entering an unfamiliar environment?
-
Does anyone truly hear and listen to your story or voice?
Time and again, we’ve encountered thoughtful, intelligent, and deeply personal responses—voices full of insight yet too often denied a platform for authentic expression.

Seed2Fork is about more than cultivating food; it’s about cultivating connections. We strive to create spaces where stories are shared, voices are heard, and meaningful actions take root. By listening, learning, and acting together, we aim to empower individuals and foster change that resonates far beyond the soil.
Our Values
At the heart of Seed2Fork is a deep respect for the enduring traditions of Black, Latino, and Indigenous societies. For centuries, these communities have exemplified a holistic approach to caring for the Earth, people, and community. We honor this legacy by teaching and sowing cultural seeds, using diverse methods that stay true to our roots while adapting to present needs.

Our approach is dynamic and responsive. We deliberately choose words like focus, journey, aim, and emergent to describe our work. These terms reflect the fluid nature of our communities' needs, which often shift based on current circumstances. Traditional corporate language such as vision and mission fails to capture the essence of our adaptive, community-centered approach.

We recognize that addressing challenges in our communities is an ongoing process. Our values guide us, but our methods remain flexible—always ready to meet the moment with relevant, culturally informed solutions.

Seed2Fork uses 4 Methodologies for Learning
These methods allow for the integration of double-loop learning as opposed to a step-by-step approach.
01
The 4 C's to 21st century skills
03
Science, Technology, Engineering, Math (STEM)
02
Project Based- Learning
04
ART Integration
4 C’s to 21st Center Life Skills
21st-century skills are essential for career pathways in BIPOC, urban, and rural communities. These skills teach the following principles:

Critical thinking- teaches individuals to question claims and seek the truth.

Creativity- encourages unique and innovative thinking.

Collaboration- demonstrates the power of groups in creating something greater than what one can achieve alone.

Communication- instructs how to efficiently convey ideas.
Collectively, these four skills empower communities to function as one-person think tanks.
ART Integration
Allowing students to explore their expressive side through the arts, able them to expand their creative thinking skills, that are necessary to solve complex engineering, science, and math problems. Students are using both sides of their brain.

Project-Based Learning, (PBL)
This learning method allows individuals to actively engage their hearts and minds in real-world, meaningful projects to enhance the relevance of learning. Most of our projects are centered around challenges and problems that our communities are currently facing in the real world.
Science, Technology, Engineering Math (STEM)
STEM education teaches more than just science and mathematics concepts. The emphasis on hands-on learning with real-world applications fosters the development of a wide range of skill sets, including media and technology literacy, productivity, social skills, flexibility, and innovation. Additionally, STEM education instills qualities such as curiosity, effective decision-making, leadership, entrepreneurship, and the ability to embrace failure. Regardless of the future career pathways, these skill sets are preparing our communities to be active participants in the global market.
